Dental implants and crown restorations are commonplace for patients looking for long-term restorations following single tooth loss. However, many patients considering their tooth replacement options have questions about this method that need to be answered by a professional. Drs. Kale Eckland and Lauren Ma of Eckland Family Dental in Redmond and Everett, Washington, have compiled a list of commonly asked questions about dental implants and crowns to explain the process and final repair better so there are no surprises!
Dental implants are small titanium posts that replace the roots of missing teeth. They serve as a sturdy foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture. Dental implants are an awesome option for many of our patients because they are durable, look natural, and help preserve your jawbone while keeping your confident smile intact!
With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime! Daily brushing and flossing and regular visits to your dental team at our office will keep them in great shape.
The crown is a separate component of the dental implant. The implant refers to the titanium post and the abutment (connector). The crown, the visible part of the tooth, is attached to the abutment. It completes the restoration and gives the implant a natural tooth appearance.
A dental implant is the root replacement surgically placed into your jawbone, while a crown is the visible “tooth” that sits on top of the implant. Together, the implant and crown create a complete, natural-looking tooth replacement.
It might sound like a big procedure, but most of our patients are surprised by how little discomfort they feel! Drs. Eckland and Ma use local anesthesia to ensure your comfort, and after the surgery, any soreness can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Most adult individuals with healthy gums and enough jawbone density are great candidates for implants. If you have lost some bone, do not worry—our dentists might discuss options like bone grafting to pave the way for your new implant.
Patience is key! Because the implant needs to fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration, which can take several months—typically three to six months. But trust us, a strong and lasting smile is worth the wait!
Taking care of your new restoration is easy. Treat it just like your natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss to clean around the gumline, and see your dental team regularly.
